The MT Internship program at Finger Lakes DDSO operates on the belief that each individual is capable of achieving higher levels of self-actualization and self-direction. Interns are trained in improvisational music therapy techniques and humanistic psychology, drawing on the philosophy of the Nordoff-Robbins’ Creative Music Therapy model and the theories of Abraham Maslow. In addition to receiving training in clinical improvisation, interns also receive extensive training in assessment, treatment planning, and clinical documentation. A variety of experiential learning opportunities are implemented, including weekly in-service, extensive reading, and supervision meetings. Interns function as full members of the interdisciplinary treatment team and gain experience working with adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in individual, two-on-one, and small-group therapy formats within day program sites.
Prospective interns are expected to demonstrate beginning level functional piano skills and a working knowledge of basic theory – although extensive experience at the piano is not required, the applicant must have a strong desire to learn. A personal interview at the facility is required if at all possible.
This internship lasts for 7-and-a-half months (1280 hours), which includes a 6-week overlap of training periods for interns. This extended training opportunity provides more time to integrate knowledge and skills, allows for more flexibility with time-off during internship, and provides interns with the opportunity to assume a leadership role in helping to orient and train incoming interns.
The Newark campus is in a small-town setting 35 miles east of Rochester, NY, home to the world renowned Eastman School of Music, and the Geneseo campus, in a college town, is located 35 miles south of Rochester. Four hours by car puts you in the heart of downtown Toronto, Canada. FLDDSO is south of Lake Ontario and surrounded by the beautiful Finger Lakes, home to some of New York State’s finest wineries.

Clients Served
Setting(s): Child/adolescent treatment ctr
Population(s): Behavioral disorder, Emotionally disturbed, School age population
Age Range: Child-adolescent
Facility Characteristics
Bethany Children's Home is a residential program for approximately 100 troubled youth ages 5-19. These children are in need of care outside their own homes due to a variety of problems. These problems may include emotional, physical and sexual abuse, dangerous or unlawful living situations, abandonment, behavior disorders, or involvement with the Office of Juvenile Probation. Interns will have the opportunity to work with the residential setting, Short Term Intensive Treatment Program, and Shelter Care Program.
Treatment services that are offered include music therapy, therapeutic recreation, social services, individual, group and family counseling, educational services, drug and alcohol counseling, independent living skills training, drug therapy and psychiatric consultations. Interns may have the opportunity to co-facilitate with other departments.
The campus is located in Womelsdorf, PA in a rural setting of woods, fields, and farms. A broad range of recreation can be found within a 15-30 minute drive. A large gymnasium and outdoor pool are available for use by the intern. Meals are provided free of charge. Some housing is available.
Training
For successful completion of this internship, interns must posses strong music skills. Piano and guitar proficiency are necessities. Other music skills that are needed include improvisation, sight reading, adaptive conducting techniques and a knowledge of current recorded music (Rap, Heavy Metal, Alternative). Bethany is a challenging, but rewarding internship. It is not for the fainthearted. The schedule is quite demanding emotionally and physically. Interns will need good stress management skills. A strong knowledge base of behavior disorders and experience with socially/emotionally disturbed youth would be helpful, though not necessary.
Strengths of the program include excellent administrative support, the supportive nature of the other staff towards the music therapy program; opportunity for co-facilitation with other departments; flexible hours; being a part of treatment teams; excellent equipment with which to work, and the creative nature of this population and age group.
